Make Impulsive Decisions – Good or Bad?

I tend to be pretty calm in the way I behave with others. When I get upset I usually go very quiet until I’ve had time to analyse the situation, calm myself and think more clearly.

When you’re in the heat of the moment, your judgement can become a little cloudy and you might not be able to make you’re the best decisions. It could be an argument you didn’t want to get yourself into. Or simply just the wrong comment at the wrong time.

I’ve gotten pretty good at not really saying what I think if I feel like I am too emotionally invested in that particular topic, as I might end up saying the wrong thing. The thing is, I’ve realised this also has its downside!

Not making impulsive decisions

Upside: analyse the situation very clearly and make the best decision based on facts, meaning you get to avoid a lot of unnecessary fights.
Downside: a lot of times you end up not really saying that something bothered you, because by the time you’ve calmed down you don’t really feel like bringing it up again. The problem it, over time, you start to feel as if you’ve lost your voice, and you’re not able to express what bothers you and what doesn’t, resulting in a lot of bottled up feelings.

Making impulsive decisions:

Upside: you express your true feelings and everyone knows exactly how you feel and act towards certain situations, meaning you don’t lose out on as many opportunities and are able to open up easier.
Downside: you’ll end up getting on a lot of unnecessary arguments and might push people away by saying the wrong thing at the wrong time.

This is just a general analysis of these two personality types, and for now I’m stuck on not making impulsive decisions.

Which one, in your opinion, do you think is best? Impulsive or not impulsive?

  3. I think being fearful of confrontion is not a good reason to NOT be impulsive but if you don’t you’ll miss your moment. I’m working on the impulsive side without being defensive.
